Design Manager

London Projects is a Chartered Construction Company based in Westminster. We specialise in the construction of super-prime residential projects in premier postcodes such as Belgravia, Knightsbridge, and Mayfair.

We are seeking talented and passionate individuals to join our growing, in-house Design Department to meet continued demand for our design management and pre-construction expertise on a number of newly awarded, one-of-a-kind projects.

The Role

We currently have an opportunity for a Design Manager based at our head office in Central London. The ideal candidate will form part of a core project team and be responsible for the technical delivery of projects, taking sole ownership of the design management process from pre-construction through to handover. The Design Manager will be expected to lead the day-to-day co-ordination and management of all stages of design information from specialist consultants and sub-contractors, in particular the integration of the building services with the architectural and structural elements of the project.

Due to the nature of the schemes in which London Projects specialises, and the unwavering expectations of our clients and their design teams, candidates will be expected to demonstrate exceptional attention to design detail and be motivated to join a business at a very exciting stage of developing their in-house design team and capabilities. The ideal candidate will be a technically competent, design-focused and aesthetically-minded individual who wants to further their career in Design Management with a leading super-prime residential contractor.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the day-to-day co-ordination and management of design information from specialist consultants and sub-contractors across a number of projects simultaneously
  • Coordinate the integration of the building services with the architectural and structural elements of the project, to include 3d modelling where necessary
  • Programme, track and QA the approvals process throughout RIBA Stage 4 & 5, including technical submittals, shop drawings and samples
  • Manage design-related RFI process through to close-out
  • Audit the design at all stages of Information Release and identify inconsistencies, discrepancies, design changes and missing information and record, track and close-out these items
  • Chair regular Design Team Meetings (DTM) and design workshops and assign, record and track action items until closed out
  • Generate and maintain Information Release Schedules and manage all associated approvals processes to ensure timely delivery of the works
  • Manage the production and approval of samples, mock ups and quality benchmarks
  • Input into Value Engineering processes
  • Provide technical input into Contractors Proposals and Contractor Design Portion submittals
  • Monitor technical compliance with Planning and Listed Building Consents and engage with Local Authorities and Estates as needed to comply with/discharge any conditions
  • Attend site regularly to monitor progress and assist in the resolution of site coordination matters with the relevant parties, including formal documentation/approval of outcomes
  • Attend and contribute to regular project meetings, both internally and externally with clients and their consultant teams
  • Adhere to Company-wide project reporting requirements in relation to design management, both internally and externally
  • Produce as-built drawings as necessary for inclusion in O&M handover documents
  • Review tender documents, assist in the production of pre-qualification and tender submissions including logistics plans, case studies, design responsibility matrices etc.
  • Contribute to Design Department initiatives outside day-to-day project running, such as branding, standards and templates, supplier outreach, consultant outreach, CPDs, sample library curation etc.

Candidate Requirements

  • Bachelor or Master degree within the field of Architecture, Interior Design, Engineering or Construction
  • Previous Design Management experience for a high-end residential Main Contractor (preferred, but not essential)
  • Previous experience managing multiple projects concurrently
  • Good working understanding of technical aspects of M&E and structural coordination
  • Good working knowledge of UK Building & Fire Regulations
  • Experience with Planning / Listed Building Consents and their technical requirements
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, SketchUp, Photoshop, Microsoft Office essential
  • Proficiency in Revit, Archicad or Vectorworks (preferred but not essential)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
